The Beauty of Scallops

There are a number of countries with coins that are rounded but have scalloped edges that sets them apart from the rest, and they are found throughout the world. The Asian countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Israel, the Maldives and the Cook Islands each have scallop edged coins. Swaziland and the Republic of Tanzania in Africa have issued these unusual coins, but Spain is one of the few European countries that have issued on in recent history.

Each of these coins has the same shape, but their values and designs are vastly different. Reflecting the interests of each country, they include a zebra, a bear and a bonito tuna. Sailing ships and mosques are also featured on some of the coins. Many of them are a celebration of special events within their respective countries, and some have been issues every year with a new design for collectors to cherish.
