End of Ringmaster messaging service
Date added: 3 March 2010
We are extremely sorry to have to report that, due to financial constraints, the Ringmaster messaging service across the South Notts Police Division, both email and voice mail, will be discontinued from 1 April 2010. Also, we are losing at the same time the excellent service we have been receiving in Bingham from our two Neighbourhood Support Workers, Wendy Morris and John Lennard. Wendy and John have provided a very professional and friendly service, for which we thank them greatly; their services will be sorely missed, and not only in Bingham. Our point of contact for Neighbourhood Watch with the police will now be exclusively through our Local Neighbourhood Policing Team in Bingham on 0300 300 99 99 Ext 6261.

New business cards for co-ordinators
Date added: 12 February 2010
Co-ordinators agreed at their quarterly meeting in December 2009 that it would be helpful in promoting the scheme to
issue them with business cards to give out to anyone showing interest in the activities of Bingham Neighbourhood Watch The cards are now available and will be given to co-ordinators at their meeting on 4 March 2010. The card carries basic details of our website address, our email address and the new Nottinghamshire Police phone number and extension. On the reverse, co-ordinators are able to show their name and contact number. It is hoped that this inexpensive technique will help to publicise and expand our scheme. Note: the cards are white with blue lettering; the photo is not a true representation.

December 2009 crime sheet
Date added: 5 January 2010
The police December 2009 crime sheet can be accessed by clicking on ‘crime sheet’ on our Crime data page. It shows 26 recorded offences, slightly lower than the historic ‘n
orm’ of 30 per month. To add some perspective to the figures, 54 per cent of the offences constituted antisocial behavior (assault and damage), with just one damage incident occurring in a NW scheme. The three shop thefts were not ‘residential’ crimes and three of the five burglary offences were not in NW schemes. None of the remaining offences (theft, taking without consent and possession of cannabis) related to NW properties. However, that said, never be complacent; members need to remain alert, particularly to burglary (take all the usual precautions) and vehicle theft (e.g. hide car keys, always lock your vehicle and never leave the engine running unattended on your drive to warm up in this cold weather – opportunist thieves will have it).

Two new schemes launched 14 December 2009
Date added: 15 December 2009
It’s great to report the launch of two new schemes. The Cogley Lane and Crow Court scheme, together with the Raymond Drive scheme, involving a total of 53 properties, were launched at a residents’ meeting on 14 December 2009 at The Old Court House, Bingham. Chairman Gordon Sanders, Bron Downing, co-ordinator for Long Acre East, and Neighbourhood Watch Support Worker Wendy Morris spoke at the meeting and handed out materials. Security items were sold and Data Link kits were distributed. Street signs will be erected shortly. We’re grateful to Michael Burke, who will serve as co-ordinator for the Cogley Lane and Crow Court scheme, and to Bron Downing who will co-ordinate the Raymond Drive scheme as an extension of her existing Long Acre East scheme. Special thanks go to Bron who did all the spadework in recruiting the extra streets. It now means that the east end of Bingham is almost completely within the scheme, with just one or two streets yet to join. We congratulate everyone concerned and wish both schemes every success in the years ahead.
Co-ordinators' meeting 26 November 2009
Date added: 11 December 2009
40 members and police representatives attended our AGM on 26 November 2009, chaired by Gordon Sanders. A warm welcome was given to Sarah Smithurst of Crimestoppers (see report below, dated 27 November 2009). Beat Manager John Kneale spoke about the October and November 2009 crime figures, where shop theft was higher than normal. John also addressed the issues of youth antisocial behavior and went on to outline several types of scams, including doorstep callers, collection bags, parcel deliveries and phone scams. The raffle, organized by Jane Best, raised £30. Bob Garland led an exercise on the role of a co-ordinator, which will be followed up at our March 2010 meeting, and Mick Walker explained the arrangements for our stall at Bingham fair on 4 December 2009. Bob Garland reported on a new innovative project that was being planned with Carnarvon Primary School, involving school staff and children, police and NW representatives. The officers for 2010 were appointed: Gordon Sanders (Chair), Bob Garland (Vice-Chair), Kay Howells (Secretary) and Chris Trivett (Treasurer). Bob Garland will run the website, and Joy Holbrook will continue to co-edit the Newsletter. Under AOB, we discussed Data Link, security items, a BNW presentation at Kimberley, and business cards for co-ordinators to help expand our scheme. Dates were agreed for the 2010 meetings: 4 March, 10 June, 2 September and 25 November. The meeting closed at 9.10pm.
Our stall at Bingham Fair Friday 4 December 2009
Date added: 7 December 2009
Our stall at Bingham Fair on Friday 4 December 2009 was a great success, yet again, thanks to
organizer Mick Walker, wife Maureen, daughter Diane and all our volunteer helpers. This was the fourth event of its kind that Mick and his family have organized, and we owe them a debt of gratitude. Thanks are also due to everyone who kindly donated the tombola prizes and all the visitors to the stall who bought tickets. As testimony to the wide range of quality prizes, the event raised an excellent £131 for our central funds, which help to finance the Neighbourhood Watch operation. Special thanks not only to Mick and his family, including grandson Ryan, but also to helpers Jane Best, Anne Broadbent, Fiona Franklin, Bob Garland, John & Anne Perkins, Gordon Sanders and Bill & Jenny Stark. Well done everyone!
The upper photo shows the popularity of the stall, while the lower one shows Jenny Stark (left) and Maureen Walker eagerly awaiting their first customers, behind a table laden with tombola prizes.
Crimestoppers presentation
Date added: 27 November 2009
Co-ordinators, at their AGM on 26 November, received an excellent, entertaining presentation on
the work of Crimestoppers from Sarah Smithurst, Crimestoppers Co-ordinator for Nottinghamshire. Sarah explained the origins and history of Crimestoppers – a charity – it’s annual running costs, the large amount of drugs taken off the streets through its work, and outlined the wide range of offences that are reported through the Crimestoppers number, 0800 555 111. She also explained how the anonymity of callers is safeguarded. Her talk was very entertaining and informative, and was widely applauded. We strongly recommend you call this number in absolute confidence if you have any information or suspicions about local crimes or criminals in Bingham.

We shall be running our usual stall, in partnership with Nottinghamshire Police, at Bingham Christmas Fair in the Market Square on Friday 4 December 2009. Please put this date in your
diary and come and visit our stall; who knows, you may bag one of our tombola prizes. Our scheme already covers 40 per cent of Bingham households and is growing. However, we need tombola prizes such as bottles of wine, new toys, games, chocolates, toiletries, linen, etc, etc, in fact any gift that you feel would make a suitable prize. All donations will be very greatly appreciated, and if you’d like to donate a prize, please e-mail our organizer, Mick Walker, at g.walker18@ntlworld.com as soon as possible. Householders have been extraordinarily generous on previous occasions and we hope you’ll make a contribution again this time.

We’re delighted that Sarah Smithurst, Crimestoppers coordinator for Nottinghamshire, will address our next co-ordinators’ meeting on Thursday 26 November 2009. Sarah will outline the work of
Crimestoppers and provide some impressive statistics on its effectiveness, e.g. “222 criminals were arrested and charged in Nottinghamshire last year as a result of information Crimestoppers received.” We urge Bingham residents to call Crimestoppers if they have any information about local criminals – the system guarantees anonymity to anyone who passes on information, and you might even qualify for a reward. You will not be asked for your name; your call will not be recorded; it will not be traced; you will not have to make a statement; and you will not appear in court. For more details, visit their website at http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/ Click on the "In your area" tab for Nottinghamshire.

June 2009 crime sheet
Date added: 10 July 2009
The June 2009 police crime sheet* shows a higher-than-average 45 crimes, though the figure does include 10 th
efts from shops (22% of the total), where meat was the main target. The list also includes 18 offences relating to assault, damage and public order (40% of the total). Almost three-fifths (59%) of the remaining 17 offences were thefts from private property (10 offences), where hanging baskets and potted plants were popular targets. The damage offences were focused on car bodywork and windows. Readers will draw their own conclusions from this data, but clearly high vigilance is required. Please stay alert and never hesitate to report suspicious behaviour. Cars should be garaged whenever possible and house windows and doors kept locked, especially when you’re in the garden.
*The detailed crime sheet can be accessed from the link at the top of our ‘Crime data’ page.
Report antisocial drunken rowdy behaviour
Date added: 6 July 2009
If you witness antisocial behaviour, typically by a group of rowdy, drunken people, often late at night, and particularly if damage is being done, then call 999 immediately with precise details of the location of the incident. Observe as thoroughly as possible for DETAILS in order to give the Police the fullest description you can: time of event; approx numbers involved; age range; male or female; description of suspected ringleaders; hairstyles; headwear; footwear; clothing; tattoos; studs; direction the group is travelling from and to; details of any damage being done; etc. And keep observing until the Police arrive. Note: It is unwise to confront such a group in the street or to shout from doors or windows. Drunken groups are often unstable and irrational – they often don’t listen to reason and you may be physically attacked or have your property vandalised. Instead, stay calm and observe unseen, logging as much detail as possible. After you have involved the police, please then notify your co-ordinator as soon as convenient.
