Bingham Virtual (Online) scheme

Date added: 22 August 2010

33 members have so far signed up to the Bingham Virtual Scheme, which is free and allows you to focus on the crime statistics for the Bingham area in various formats to suit yourself (e.g. last months’ figures as a 3D bar chart; the whole year as a 3D pie chart; or the last 14 days as a summary, etc).  It allows you the freedom to interrogate the crime patterns on any time scale you choose and in whatever format you wish.  You can see the modus operandi of individual crimes, report information back to the police and engage in scheme discussions.  And it also lets you see the crime Alerts that have been sent out previously. The more Bingham residents who sign up to the scheme the stronger becomes our collective awareness and security as our network becomes extended and more informed.  So we urge Bingham residents to join – and you don’t have to be in a Neighbourhood Watch scheme to join.  To remind you how to join:

  1. Go to www.rushcliffecommunity.co.uk
  2. Choose your own Username and Password
  3. Type these in and ‘Join’
  4. Once you have joined, email mail@bingham-watch.com with your name and phone number, saying you’d like to join the Bingham Virtual Scheme.
  5. We will then invite you to join.

We look forward to welcoming you.

We’re very grateful to Shirley Heywood, who has kindly taken over as co-ordinator for the Orchard Avenue scheme of 32 properties after Frank Kerry chose to step down on health grounds.  Some of you will know that Orchard Avenue is one of our longest-standing schemes, for which Bob Killingworth was the original co-ordinator.  Bob was the very enthusiastic founding Chairman of the Bingham scheme, before moving to Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

Launch of new scheme

Date added: 16 July 2010

The new Skylark Close scheme was launched at a meeting of approximately 20 residents at The Old Court House on 15 July 2010, thanks to the initiative of new co-ordinator David Mason and his wife Helen.  The meeting was also attended by Chairman Gordon Sanders, Vice-Chairman Bob Garland, Beat Manager PC John Kneale and PCSO Richard Bombroffe.  A detailed Welcome Pack was available for every household in the scheme.  Helen Mason welcomed residents, and Gordon and Bob outlined the structure and operation of the Bingham scheme, detailing all the key contacts and encouraging members to sign up to the police Neighbourhood Alert messaging system.  Members were encouraged to visit regularly the Bingham website. PC John Kneale and PCSO Richard Bombroffe explained the police role, their partnership with Neighbourhood Watch and spoke about crime figures and security advice.  Gordon demonstrated a range of security devices including shed alarms, window alarms, personal attack alarms, all available at discounted prices, and Bob explained the SmartWater security marking kit. Data Link kits were also explained and freely available.  There was a good interchange of ideas including such issues as burglar alarms, crime figures, effectiveness of Neighbourhood Watch in reducing crime, security strategies, thinking like a burglar, positioning of the street signs and the need for residents to support the co-ordinator, David. Members were encouraged to persuade neighbouring streets to join, in order to provide greater collective security in that part of Bingham.  We have little doubt the scheme will be well organized and wish David and his members every possible success.

Date added: 16 July 2010

We’re delighted to announce the re-launch of Hammond Harwood’s Sponsorship Scheme to support our funds.  For every property that Estate Agency Hammond Harwood sells on a road in membership of Bingham Neighbourhood Watch, the estate agency donates £25 to Bingham Neighbourhood Watch.  When contacted by Jonathan Hammond to learn of this renewal of the sponsorship deal, Chairman Gordon Sanders said, “I was absolutely delighted when Jonathan contacted me with this news.  The support we receive from Hammond Harwood is terrific and we’re very grateful to them.” The picture shows Jonathan Hammond (right) presenting the first £25 cheque to Chairman Gordon Sanders (centre) on 15 July 2010, with Vice-Chairman Bob Garland (left) in the presence of Beat Manager PC John Kneale (next to Jonathan) and PCSO Richard Bombroffe.

Stall at Bingham Fair Saturday 12 June 2010

Date added: 13 June 2010

Verdict: a brilliant day!  Our stall at Bingham Fair on Saturday 12 June (the day our footballers could only manage 1 – 1 draw with the USA) attracted so many visitors that our tombola was sold out by 12.30pm, and we thank everyone who generously made donations and all those who bought tickets.  Without those donations we would have no tombola, and your contributions are greatly appreciated.  The tombola generated a superb £131 for central funds.  We’re particularly indebted to Chairman Gordon Sanders, who organized and staffed the stall all day, and to Jane Best who labelled all the gifts and worked so tirelessly on the stall for several hours. Thanks are also due to everyone else who helped on the stall, including Jane Baker, Pat Byard, PCSO Sally Charles, Fiona Franklin, Bob Garland, Joy Holbrook, Barbara Holland-Leader, Elsie Murray and John Perkins.  Interactions with the public were many and fruitful, and we’re hopeful the occasion will generate several new schemes. Many congratulations to everyone concerned. The upper picture shows a packed stall with (left to right) Jane Best, Joy Holbrook behind the stall, Gordon Sanders and John Perkins. The lower shot shows Elsie Murray, Gordon Sanders and Bob Garland (both photos courtesy of Anthony Hall).

Brain Teaser 2 answers

Date added: 12 June 2010

The June newsletter (see 3 June 2010 below) included Brain Teaser 2.  The answers to the 5 street names are:  1.  Walkers Close (anagram);   2.  Crow Court (Russell Crowe, nabbed = caught);  3.  Langar Road (cargo = load, rag ran = anagram);  4.  Cogley Lane  (leer = ogle, confines of conservatory = cy, hence Cogley; Venus = planet, without ends = lane). 5 out of 5?

Bingham burglaries

Date added: 12 May 2010

Bingham has suffered some recent burglaries in early May, so we ask all residents to stay vigilant and protect their property as best they can.  Please always lock your doors and windows and try to look in when out.  Ideally, install a burglar alarm and use timer switches on your lights and TV or radio.  There is no excuse for permitting a ‘walk-in’ burglary, where the thief enters through an open door or window, and yet this type of crime happens all too often.  Complacency is your biggest enemy, so don’t give the criminals an easy ride.

Co-ordinators' visit to police control centre

Date added: 1 May 2010

A group of 14 Bingham co-ordinators visited the Nottinghamshire Police control centre at Sherwood Lodge on 22 April 2010, by invitation of Nigel Turner, police Partnerships Officer.  We saw at first hand how 999 calls are handled and resources targeted at the various incidents.  A wall monitor displayed a response rate of 93% of 999 calls being handled within 10 seconds, the response rate being constantly updated.  The highest category incidents are normally reached within an average of 10-20 minutes.  The Nottinghamshire control centre is well resourced and ranks among the top few such centres in the UK.  It was a valuable and informative learning experience for our co-ordinators.

Use of force against intruders

Lock up to beat the burglar

Date added: 19 April 2010

Well over a quarter (28 per cent) of domestic burglaries in our area are ‘walk-in’, where householders have left doors and/or windows unlocked.  In a recent case in Bingham burglars entered a house, walked through to the kitchen, picked up car keys and stole the car – while the owners were at home!  The police have asked us to include this press release on our site, which provides more information.  Hopefully, no NW residents will be caught out this way!

New scheme launched - Langar Road

Date added: 1 April 2010

We’re delighted to report the launch of another new scheme.  The Langar Road scheme, comprising 17 properties, was launched by Chairman Gordon Sanders and Vice-Chairman Bob Garland at a very well-attended meeting of residents at The Old Court House, Bingham, on Wednesday 31 March 2010.  Information packs were distributed at the meeting and there was an excellent exchange of information and ideas. Congratulations to new co-ordinators Jeff and Sue Yardley; it’s clear they’ll be strongly supported by members and we wish them and all scheme members every success with the scheme.  Langar Road becomes the 85th street in the Bingham scheme, which now involves over 1800 households and approximately 4000 residents.

Carnarvon Primary School Project 17 March 2010

Date added: 18 March 2010

A team of Bingham co-ordinators has been working with members of Nottinghamshire police and staff of Carnarvon Primary School, Bingham, to design and deliver an innovative project for the pupils.  The project took place on 17 March 2010.  It introduced the concept of Neighbourhood Watch and involved the pupils in 4 key activities: describing a stranger; coding of small valuables; finger printing; and bicycle coding.  63 Year 5 pupils took part and thoroughly enjoyed the session.  The children were each presented with a goody bag at the end day, which included a range of small items and, crucially, a questionnaire involving 16 multiple-choice questions to test their – and their parents’ – knowledge of security issues.  Pupils were given a week to complete and return their questionnaires, which will be marked and returned to them after the Easter holiday.  A detailed evaluation of the project will take place in April.  Grateful thanks are offered to Head Teacher, Jonathan Cunliffe, and to co-ordinators Alan Cotton, Bron Downing, Bob Garland, Barrie Phillips and Gordon Sanders; and also to PCSOs Matt Adcock, Richard Bombroffe and Sally Charles, together with Neighbourhood Watch Support Worker, Wendy Morris, who were all involved in the design and delivery of the project.  Class teachers Vanessa Andreoli and Richard Hall contributed valuably to the exercises and School Secretary Kay Howells gave strong administrative support.  This was a strong team effort, which made a major contribution towards the pupils’ understanding of their own safety and security.  We shall report further after the full evaluation. The upper picture shows Wendy Morris leading an exercise on coding and finger printing, while the lower photo shows Gordon Sanders demonstrating bicycle coding.

Distraction burglary poster

Date added: 11 March 2010

You may be aware Operation Liberal is a nationwide campaign to reduce distraction burglary.  In the South Notts Police Division there have been 50 such offences reported in the past 12 months.  Whilst this is an extremely low rate of offence, just a single victim of this type of crime is one too many.  The low rate of reported offences would indicate that most people are aware of the precautions they need to take to avoid becoming a victim of this type of crime.  However, to maintain awareness and avoid complacency, the police have suggested you look at this poster.  Further advice on crime reduction can be obtained from the South Notts Police Division Crime Reduction Managers; just ring 0300 300 99 99 and ask to be put through to your local Crime Reduction Manger.

End of Ringmaster messaging service

Date added: 3 March 2010

We are extremely sorry to have to report that, due to financial constraints, the Ringmaster messaging service across the South Notts Police Division, both email and voice mail, will be discontinued from 1 April 2010.  Also, we are losing at the same time the excellent service we have been receiving in Bingham from our two Neighbourhood Support Workers, Wendy Morris and John Lennard.  Wendy and John have provided a very professional and friendly service, for which we thank them greatly; their services will be sorely missed, and not only in Bingham.  Our point of contact for Neighbourhood Watch with the police will now be exclusively through our Local Neighbourhood Policing Team in Bingham on 0300 300 99 99 Ext 6261.

Note: the cards are white with blue lettering; the photo is not a true representation.

Crimestoppers presentation

Date added: 27 November 2009

Co-ordinators, at their AGM on 26 November, received an excellent, entertaining presentation on the work of Crimestoppers from Sarah Smithurst, Crimestoppers Co-ordinator for Nottinghamshire.  Sarah explained the origins and history of Crimestoppers – a charity – it’s annual running costs, the large amount of drugs taken off the streets through its work, and outlined the wide range of offences that are reported through the Crimestoppers number, 0800 555 111. She also explained how the anonymity of callers is safeguarded.  Her talk was very entertaining and informative, and was widely applauded.  We strongly recommend you call this number in absolute confidence if you have any information or suspicions about local crimes or criminals in Bingham.

Date added: 12 October 2009

We’re delighted that Sarah Smithurst, Crimestoppers coordinator for Nottinghamshire, will address our next co-ordinators’ meeting on Thursday 26 November 2009.  Sarah will outline the work of Crimestoppers and provide some impressive statistics on its effectiveness, e.g. “222 criminals were arrested and charged in Nottinghamshire last year as a result of information Crimestoppers received.”   We urge Bingham residents to call Crimestoppers if they have any information about local criminals – the system guarantees anonymity to anyone who passes on information, and you might even qualify for a reward.  You will not be asked for your name; your call will not be recorded; it will not be traced; you will not have to make a statement; and you will not appear in court.   For more details, visit their website at http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/ Click on the "In your area" tab for Nottinghamshire.

Bogus workmen con Bingham resident

Date added: 20 August 2009

An elderly female Bingham resident was conned on 19 August 2009 by three men who were tarmacing her driveway.  The details of the offenders, description of their van and police advice are shown in Ringmaster Message 1464 by clicking on the ‘Ringmaster alerts’ link on our Crime data page.  We have warned many times about bogus callers and rogue workmen, and we refer you to our ‘Documents’ page where there is a link to the ‘Documents’ page of the RUNWAY website, with a guide to protection against bogus callers.  Elderly women living alone are the prime target for such villains. Please try to protect your elderly neighbours, friends and relatives against these rogues and - as the police advise - never buy services at the door!
