Our scheme

The Bingham Neighbourhood Watch scheme has existed for 19 years. It's a thriving, expanding scheme that has recently won awards as the best group scheme in the Borough of Rushcliffe. In January 2008 we won the national 'Group of the Month' award. We've an active management committee and 55 co-ordinators who oversee the 71 streets in membership, covering about 1800 households. Co-ordinators meet quarterly in March, June, September and December, when we frequently have guest speakers. We work closely with the Bingham Police, the Town Council, Hammond Harwood estate agents, SURE 24 Ltd and other organisations. We deliver a free newsletter to all scheme households in June and December each year. All our co-ordinators and many of our members are on the Ringmaster police messaging system operated by Rushcliffe Community Watch. We've a base at Bingham police station and we receive monthly crime sheets that are discussed at the quarterly meetings with our Beat Manager, PC John Kneale. Members can also access the Rushcliffe crime data for more detailed information. We've run several projects in recent years designed to provide practical help and security equipment for our elderly and more vulnerable members. We sell SmartWater and other security equipment to members at discount prices and also offer free security coding of equipment. We're confident that membership of Bingham Neighbourhood Watch enhances collective responsibility, lessens the likelihood of becoming a victim and helps to reduce the fear of crime.

We have twice won Rushcliffe Borough Council's award for the best group scheme in Rushcliffe, in 2002 and 2003, the only years that we have submitted an application.  In March 2007 we were awarded RUNWAY's Certificate of Achievement award for services to the Neighbourhood Watch movement. In January 2008, against stiff competition, we won the national 'Group of the Month' competition, awarded by Neighbourhoodwatch.net, for our SmartWater project.

The photo shows Gordon Sanders holding the 2003 award certificate, having been presented by the Mayor of Rushcliffe, Cllr Eddie Fearon, in the presence of a group of Bingham co-ordinators, from left to right: Jose Baker, Ken Clark, Cllr John Bradley, Mayor of Rushcliffe, Bob Garland, Gordon Sanders and Anne Perkins.

The Bingham scheme does not operate in isolation. We are affiliated to RUNWAY (Rushcliffe Neighbourhood Watch Association) and retain close contact and share good practice with other schemes around Rushcliffe. This is principally through the Management Committee structure of RUNWAY, which has representatives from the following regions: Bingham, Cotgrave, East Leake, Keyworth, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Ruddington and West Bridgford. The police (represented by Inspector Glenn Harper) and Rushcliffe Borough Council (Community Safety Officer) are also on the Management Committee. Maria Wake, our Chairman, is the Bingham region representative on the committee.

Chairman's message

Welcome to our website. We hope you will enjoy exploring the site to learn more about our scheme. The site provides information on a wide range of topics, including: the streets in membership (if your street is not listed, why not join us?), the benefits of Neighbourhood Watch, typical projects we've undertaken and our key partners. Crucially, it provides links to a wide range of other websites with advice on crime prevention and related issues. Ours is a progressive and expanding scheme - membership has more than doubled in the past three years - and we anticipate further growth as more residents appreciate the benefits of membership. We work very closely with Bingham Police and other key partners in the town. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions and, should you decide to join us, you can be sure of a warm welcome.
Best wishes
Gordon Sanders, Chairman and Security Co-ordinator.
